There reached a point in the US where illicit drugs were being misused. It raised a lot of concern and it became clear that drastic measures had to be taken. National drugs policies were then implemented in order to save its nations and are still in use to the current date.

These policies are to:

  •         Regulate the usage and possession of the drugs.
  •         Control drug trafficking.
  •         Control the manufacture of illegal drugs.
  •         Control drug substance act

Some drugs are used both as illicit drugs and still have medicinal value hence they are very important in the hospitals. This then led to comprehensive scrutiny of drugs in order to classify them according to their respective classes. There are mild drugs, medicinal drugs and hard drugs. Those factors used to classify the drugs include the following:

  •  The risk they impose to people’s health.
  •  If the drug can be used to make another controlled drug.
  •  Scientific knowledge and evidence about the drugs and their effects.
  •  Whether there is a potential risk of abuse of the drugs and whether the risk is relative or actual.
  •  Whether the drug can lead to any psychological or physical dependence.

The policies that were passed across contain detailed description. They are as follows:

  • Regulate usage and possession of the drugs
  • Possession is classified into two. Simple possession and possession with intent.
  • Simple possession. This arises in a situation where an individual is found using or carrying the illicit drugs for their personal use. The drugs are normally in very small quantities. The consequences of possessing such drugs are not so severe as compared to possession with intent.
  • Possession with intent. This is a situation whereby many small bags of the drugs that can amount to a lot of money is found.

Trafficking

Anyone found selling, transporting or even smuggling the drugs is to face certain penalties. Some people sell prescribed drugs that are illegal or drugs that they have no rights to distribute. The illegal prescription drugs are also categorized as trafficking and they also face certain penalties. Similar to drug possession, the trafficking also faces the penalties according to their types and effects.

Manufacturing of illegal drugs

Manufacturing include growing of the illegal drugs or any steps that are followed in producing the drugs. Certain quantities are used to allocate the various penalties issued due to the manufacture of the illegal drugs.

There is however a grey area in the drug policies. This include the analysis of Alcohol and marijuana. In marijuana there is partial illegalization. This is because there are certain qualities in marijuana that makes it harmful if misused and also there are certain qualities that can make it very beneficial. Mostly in the hospital sector where they have some medicinal benefits.

In the alcohol sector, they tried to eliminate illegal booze and alcohol black markets. These two were controlled by setting high tax rates, they also try to limit the marketing of the alcohol and also the government decided to take total state control over the retail sales.

The no drug policy in the US seem very perfect. It makes the world a better place. In my opinion the legalization of alcohol seems a little bit careless for me since many people lose their ways or even die from alcohol consumption.
